F-114 was my favorite EM game as a kid. I used to play one in a giant arcade in Sea Side Heights, NY on the boardwalk in the late 1970′s to the early 1980′s. This was around the time that Walkman’s and Duke’s of Hazzard was popular. As soon as the early video games like Asteroids and Space Invaders hit the arcade, these old EM games were relegated to the back of the arcade and were ignored.

Thanks, Pat! I appreciate it. Mine’s in rough shape as you can see from the pics. When I finally get around to restoring it, I’ll let you know. It looks like I’m going to have to install new felt and silk screen on some art.

It was one of those afternoons at work and just thought of Lake George, the last time my family was there was 1965 or 66. The pictures here brought back allot of dreams. When I was there no Mars ride existed. It is to bad things change so much.

Hi Jakes,

I finished the project in 2007 and traded it for a broken Space Invaders and a Future Spa pin. I’m glad you asked about it as I never wrote a post to say what ultimately happened with the project. After I fixed the monitor curl issue, I tried troubleshooting the boards. I did have ROM problems, as well as a bad CPU and a few other components on the MPU board! I had no idea I had so many problems at the time, though. After I tried to troubleshoot it for a week and had no luck, I sent the boardset off to Elektron Forge. They did an excellent job and I had the boardset back within a couple of weeks. If you have troubles figuring out the problems with your Defender, I highly recommend them! Best of luck!

Hey Spaced Invader,

That’s great! Glad to hear you picked up a SID and it still plays. I see SID (and SI) backdrops on eBay from time to time. They are two pieces of cardboard — the “sky”, which is piece of cardboard stapled on the sides and slightly bent to form a curved background, and the “planet”, which is a semi-circle piece of cardboard. I see them on eBay from time to time. You can usually pick up a non-working SID for $50-$150 depending on the cabinet’s condition. I hope you luck out with completing the game soon. It’s addictive, of course!

WOW! I just brought my Space Invaders Deluxe home today. Even though the backdrop is gone, I love it. It beaten to a pulp but it still plays. Already looking forward to restoring it or maybe finding another to restore with the parts from this one. Now if I could just find that backdrop black-light backdrop… Some great info. Thanks!

Thanks. I leave the metal permanently that’s under the bondo. It gives the bondo support plus the metal is not seen as it’s under the control panel. I don’t have to worry about putting in the effort to take the metal out.
